Do you ever listen to music and notice your mood or energy shift? Think about it. When you hear a hip hop or pop song, the song is a bit more upbeat, higher energy, so you might want to dance or sing. How about when a slow, meditation song comes on?

That’s the simplest way to show how sound can affect our mood, energy, and even thought patterns.

To understand sound healing, we have to look at frequency and how sound affects our bodies, minds, and souls. In order to do this, we also have to look at energy and matter, and how they’re affected by sound frequencies.

What is energy?

In non-trending terms, everything is made of energy first and foremost. In the Law of Conservation, it essentially says that energy is a quantitative force that is action waiting to be used. It cannot be created nor destroyed, just transmuted or alchemized.

Those fancy words really just mean that energy is everywhere, and everything is made of it. Even a chair—a piece of matter that appears to be unmoving, can be looked at on the microscopic level. You will find the atoms tightly together, and they’re vibrating. Those atoms come together to create what we see and interpret as a chair.

But the air, for example, is also an energy in the form of a gas. We can’t see it because the atoms and molecules are spread wide apart. While we can’t see it, it can still be moved: for example, the wind–which can be influenced by so many factors.

Our bodies are no different. In grade school science class, we’re taught about the cells of the body. How these teeny tiny organisms that make up our internal world are wired to sustain, protect, and nourish our bodies, minds, and souls. These organisms convert food into energy that can be stored and used.

These cells are made of atoms, like anything else. Atoms move and vibrate at certain frequencies depending on the matter it is creating. Atoms emit and can absorb frequency.

Frequency and Vibrations

Frequency comes from vibrations. Vibrations are the movement of energy back and forth at the molecular level. Frequency is the amount of vibrations that move, change and shift within a period of time.

So that brings me to the next point. Everything emits a certain frequency, and everything can absorb a certain frequency.

Bringing sound bowls in as an example. Crystal sound bowls are a beautiful example of instruments that radiate a healing frequency that ripples through the air to enter our ears and our bodies. Our bodies are vibrating at a certain frequency, but when we introduce another frequency, the body begins to be affected and influenced by the new frequency. This is called resonance.

What is resonance in Sound Healing?

Resonance in sound is when the body's frequency shifts to match the frequency of the sound bowls. Typically, in sound healing, we use sound bowls in 432 hz. When the bowl is being played, the body tries to match this frequency, moving out any stagnance or tension that is blocking the energy flow. This also allows us to slip into the parasympathetic nervous system, which takes us out of fight or flight mode. It reduces stress, anxiety, even the constant thoughts that swirl around in our minds. It, in essence, sends us into this trance-like state, which allows the body to begin its healing process. Think when we get a massage, or we go to sleep, it is the time for the body to recover and replenish itself. When we slip into sound healing, we’re receiving a similar healing process.

We're All Made of Energy

In short, we’re all made of energy, and energy innately can affect other energy. Think of it this way: your friend is in a bad mood, you sense they are in a bad mood. The friend’s energy level is low, and even though your energy is high, you feel lower. That is energy affecting energy. Just like how the frequency of a sound bowl can affect your current state of being.
